Full DP Maker
Turn a tall or wide photo into a square profile picture with nothing cropped away. Fill the leftover space with a blurred copy of the photo or a solid colour, adjust how large the subject sits in the frame, and download a DP that WhatsApp, Instagram or Telegram will accept as-is.
The problem this solves
Messaging apps store profile pictures as squares and display them as circles. When you upload a portrait photo, the app offers a fixed crop circle and you lose the top and bottom of the picture. Squaring the photo before you upload it means the crop circle has nothing left to remove.
What you need
One photo, any aspect ratio, in a format your browser can decode. Portrait shots benefit the most; a photo that is already square gains nothing from this tool.
How to make a full size DP in four steps
- Add the photo. Click, drag it onto the page, or paste it.
- Choose what fills the sides. Blur, a solid colour, or crop if you changed your mind.
- Set the photo size. Below 100% the subject pulls away from the edges, which matters because the app will show a circle.
- Download at 1024 x 1024 and set it as your profile picture.
Sizes worth knowing
| Platform | Stored size | Shape shown |
|---|---|---|
| 640 x 640 | Circle | |
| 320 x 320 | Circle | |
| Telegram | 512 x 512 | Circle |
| 320 x 320 | Circle on profile, square in some lists |
All of these downscale whatever you send. Exporting at 1024 x 1024 gives them a clean source; exporting at 4000 pixels just makes the upload slower.
When this will not look good
- A very wide photo. Squaring a 16:9 landscape leaves huge bands above and below, and the subject ends up tiny inside the display circle. Crop mode is the honest answer for those.
- Text near the edges. The circular mask cuts the corners. Keep words in the middle 70% or they will be sliced.
- A busy background with blur mode. The blurred copy inherits the same colours, so a cluttered photo produces a muddy surround. Solid colour is cleaner.
- A low-resolution original. Fitting a 300-pixel photo inside a 1024-pixel square does not add detail; it just makes the softness bigger.
How this differs from the other tools here
The main square converter does the same four modes but is aimed at posts rather than avatars, and defaults to 1200 px. This page defaults to 1024 px and adds the photo size slider, because a DP is displayed as a circle and the subject usually needs to be pulled in from the edges. For finer control over the blurred backdrop, use Blurred Frame. If you would rather choose the crop yourself, use Square Crop.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a WhatsApp DP be?
WhatsApp stores a profile photo at 640 x 640 pixels and displays it as a circle. Exporting at 1024 x 1024 gives the app a sharp source to downscale from; anything larger is discarded on upload.
How do I set a full DP on WhatsApp without cropping?
WhatsApp only lets you move and zoom inside a fixed circle, so a portrait photo always loses its top and bottom. Make the photo square here first, with blur or a solid colour filling the sides. When you then upload it, the crop circle already covers the whole picture and nothing important is cut.
Will the corners still be cut off?
Yes, on any platform that shows a circular avatar. A circle inscribed in a square always loses the four corners. Use the photo size slider to shrink the subject a little so it sits inside the circle rather than in the corners.
Which background mode should I pick?
Blur suits photos of people and places because the colours already match. Colour suits logos, product shots and anything with a flat background. Crop is there for the times you actually do want to fill the frame.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The square is drawn on a canvas in your browser and the file is saved straight to your device.
